Victoria and Abdul, Judi Dench

You will laugh, you will cry, you will go “WOW, ” and your emotional ride will be everything in between when you watch an upcoming Focus Features film VICTORIA & ABDUL.

Focus Features Victoria & Abdul, Judi Dench

Featuring Academy Award winner and one of my favorite actresses Judi Dench who plays Queen Victoria in her later years of governing, and Ali Fazal who plays a young clerk Abdul Karim straight from India – this movie will bring a fresh view of human connection when the stigmas and prejudices are shattered down when the true life’s values step in.

When it comes to the grandiosity of filming big scenes, sporting just the right locale is the key! The movie’s banquet was filmed at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, United Kingdom.

The Royal Naval College, Greenwich, was a Royal Navy training establishment between 1873 and 1998, providing courses for naval officers. It was the home of the Royal Navy’s staff college, which provided advanced training for officers.

The Audience Had To Be Accommodated Royally, Hence the Filming Locale – Royal Naval College in Greenwich, UK.

All the extras you see in the screenshot from the movie had to be dressed up and go to the Royal banquet! You will find that these people have done an amazing job. FYI: Extras have a call and are picked by the casting crew based on their age, race and certain demographics that is pertinent to the culture and century the action’s taking place in. I find it fascinating. The majority of these people have never done any professional theatrical or TV training. They are paid for the right look and are trained in mannerisms for every scene.

Extras Enjoying the Banquet Scene!

I can’t wait to see this movie and learn something new for myself. Every story has a thread of truth in it. And this script is based on true life’s circumstances.

With a talented director Stephen Frears (“The Queen,” “Philomena,” “Mrs. Henderson Presents”) we are for a magical time in front of the Big Screen!

  • This sounds like a great movie. I had no idea that extras generally had no acting training! Maybe I can be an extra one day.

    • Pam,
For the massive crowds like this one, the extras are usually pulled from the pool of people who do nothing, but… Extras! That’s their job.
Once they found their niche, they get call backs and get these roles.
Depending on a project, extras can be paid a few hundred dollars per day, plus all food and transportation provided.
Again, all depends on the project and budget.
Some movies do not have a costume requirement, which means Extras have to provide their own outfit. But these days, in budgeted movies, they are provided outfits. Especially for the cultural look like this one, from the Queen Victoria’s century!

  • This looks like a very interesting movie. I haven’t heard of it, but it seems like something a little different, and I like the cast.

  • I would love to see this movie! I just can’t get enough of Judi Dench – she’s an amazing actress!

  • I will look forward to seeing this movie. I love period films because of all the pomp and splendor of the royalties. I think this movie will be an eye opener as two people from entirely diverse cultures end up to be best friends.

  • I honestly love absolutely anything to do with Queen Victoria! I am going to have to check this out, it sounds like something I would absolutely adore!

  • I have always been fascinated with the Royal Family. Their lives, their challenges, and their relationship with people around them are an interesting read for me. I love that there will be a movie about Queen Victoria. I am so looking forward to seeing this.

  • Anything with Dame Judi Dench and I’m there. She’s so elegant and refined. I’ve been a fan of hers since the James Bond movie, ‘GoldenEye’. I even love Tracey Ulmann’s spoof of her: “I’m
    a national treasure.”
