Of Monsters and Men Are From Iceland, So Why Use English?

This is definitely one of the most bizarre music videos I’ve seen in a while. I’m not sure how I feel about it.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s a pretty simple video. No special effects, at least not more than just creative camera work. But it has impressive lighting and an awesome futurist dystopian feel to it.

This official version was released five months ago, but it was preceded in March by the ‘Official Lyric Video,” which is possibly even more bizarre! Here, I’ll post it for your viewing. I’ve definitely never seen a lyric video like this before!

Who is this Robert De Niro looking gentleman?! Funny you should ask, because it’s Siggi Sigurjóns. No, I don’t know who he is, except that he appears to be a fairly famous Icelandic actor.

Why Icelandic? Well, because Of Monsters and Men are an Icelandic band, even though all of their music is in English. This is not necessarily a strange fact given that English is required study for all students. In fact, there is a debate about whether or not the Icelandic language will eventually be jettisoned for English. Some people actually think that it will happen in this century.

Singing in English has served Of Monsters and Men well. Their previous album, My Head Is an Animal, with the big hit ‘Little Talks,’ charted quite well in numerous countries. In fact, they are perhaps the most famous band from Iceland, with the only true competition for that title would be from Sigur Ros. However, both Björk and Emiliana Torrini are from there.
