Drake has been all over the Internet the last week or so because of his new video for ‘Hotline Bling.’
I first caught glimpse of this when I come across a Washington Post article called, “Does Drake Take ‘Uncool’ Too Far?’ The crux of the article was that the Internet was alight with people attacking his dancing as being ‘uncool,’ with a debate going on about whether it was authentic or not.
In other words, “Is he truly uncool (which is kind of cool) or does he just play at being uncool (which is pretentious)?”
Regardless, Drake has awakened the Internet, as everyone has enjoyed putting his dancing to other music, including the Frazier theme song, the Peanuts theme song, Bob Marley, and the Rugrats theme song.
The video, which comes from the biggest rapper of the year, has more to it than cool or uncool, according to The Atlantic, however. Spencer Kornhaber there suggests that the song, which uses a “cha-cha” beat virtually unheard of in popular music today, and the video, with his uncool dancing, Drake “finally declares himself the alpha-and-omega of Internet culture, someone who makes a video intended for mockery and then puts the mockery on his Instagram.” Apparently, Drake has proclaimed that he truly hopes it hits number one, which would be his first ever.
I don’t know what I think, nor do I think I’m in any place to throw down with these folks who spend their lives and careers delving into pop culture. But I’m going to admit at this point that I actually quite like the song. It has an unusual beat, a interesting vocal range, and is just something that you can’t help but dance to.
