This song is relatively old, having been released in 2012, but I have never heard it. Perhaps it’s because it never quite reached the peak I think it deserved (topping off at 77), so it never reached the point where it was everywhere.
The song is beautiful and I think you should give the lyrics a good listen. It’s called ‘Battle Scars.’ I really like it. Every aspect of it.
This song is a collaboration between Lupe Fiasco and Guy Sebastian. It was originally released on the latter’s album, but later put on the former’s, too.
Lupe Fiasco is the stage name of Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, who grew up in the projects in Chicago to parents who taught him the importance of education and reading. He says that his dad is the one who taught him about the world and the wide array of music in it.
He originally disliked rap music because of its crude language and misogyny, preferring instead jazz music. Nevertheless, he found himself going down the path of that type of music for a while, but reassessed after the band broke up, realizing he needed to be true to himself. That’s when he met Jay-Z, who helped him secure a record contract and he hasn’t turned back.
Guy Sebastian, though the same age as Lupe (Sebastian turned 34 in October, while Fiasco turns that age this month), couldn’t have grew up any different. Born in Malaysia to parents from mixed backgrounds (father was a Malaysian-born Sri Lankan Tamil, while his mother was English-Portugese but raised in India), he was primarily raised in Australia. He is the single most successful male artist in Australian billboard history, with this song being his most successful.
I hope you enjoy the song as much as I! I genuinely enjoy it.
