The meteoric direction of Sam Smith’s music career doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. The unique sound of the British artist seems to be tickling everyone’s fancy, even the Hollywood Foreign Press, who dole out the Golden Globes every year.
His theme song for the latest James Bond film, Spectre, which was released in November, was his latest accolade. He and his co-writer brought home the award for Best Original Song in a motion picture.
As far as Bond films go, it’s obviously well in line with other songs. However, I noticed that the Daniel Craig series of movies have had more male vocalists than what I was used to hearing. Looking it up, I was right, as least compared to the Pierce Brosnan movies. In those movies, which were four movies from 1995 until 2002, all of the featured songs were sung by women. In fact, besides the Craig movies, you have to go back to 1987 to get to a male singing the main song.
In any case, the Bond films have never exactly been king-makers when it comes to choosing an artist, but rather just a recognition that the artist or band is at the top of their pop culture game. In most cases, the person they ask to perform the song is already huge in all regards. Like the last song by Adele, Sam Smith does an admirable job in his work, being both passionate and soulful.
I suspect Sam Smith will be sticking around the pop culture world on and off for twenty years or more. That’s my bet anyway. We’ll see if I eat crow at some point, but I’m personally crossing my fingers.
