A few years ago, I was given tickets to a concert by The Avett Brothers. I had never heard of them, but I am so glad I went! Since then, they have become a huge favorite of mine.
This song in particular, Murder in the City, I found to be almost impossibly beautiful. Unlike almost all other songs about love, this is about the love that only a family can share.
“Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name.”
North Carolina natives, The Avett Brothers consist of multi-instrumentalist brothers Scott and Seth, along with double bass and cello players. Their music is an eclectic mix of bluegrass, country, pop, rock, punk, folk, and honky tonk, making them a perfect example of pure Americana at its best.
I’ve heard them being described as “doing to bluegrass what The Pogues did for Celtic music.”
If you know of other songs about the love of families, I’d love to hear about them below.
