I don’t think anyone expected ‘All About That Bass’ to become quite the sensation that it has. The song has achieved both popular and critical success.
Meghan Trainor’s song about not being a size 2 has topped charts in over 50 countries and nearly 5 million copies have been purchased in the U.S. alone. The video has nearly been viewed an astounding 600 million times. Moreover, although the song was released back in July, it is still the 25th most downloaded song on iTunes.
Surprisingly for such a popular hit, the song also received critical acclaim, being nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Song of the Year and Best Record of the Year. Although it didn’t ultimately win either of these (those went to Sam Smith), Meghan Trainor definitely had her profile raised as a result of it.
However, ‘All About That Bass’ hasn’t been without it controversy. Trainor has been charged with anti-feminism for the lyrics and for shaming thin girls. Furthermore, Trainor has even been charged with plagiarism because of it’s similarities to a song by a South Korean band.
Like it or hate, however, the song will be sticking around for some time.
