I suspect that you’ll be hearing a lot from Troye Sivan in the coming months. In fact, someone recommended I post this video months ago and completely forgot about it until I heard the song on the radio the other day. My friend who recommended it clearly had a good sense of what was coming down the pop pipeline. I, as any reader of this blog would know, am not exactly attuned to what might or might not become popular.
Troye Sivan, who was born in South Africa but raised in Perth, Australia, is only twenty years old, but has had a pretty full work schedule. As young as twelve, Troye, who uses his middle name rather than is real last name, which is Mellet, began acting. His first appearance was in a stage performance of Oliver! in the lead role. He also began uploading YouTube audio-only posts, which caught the attention of an agent in Hollywood. Shortly thereafter, at the age of thirteen, he was hired for a role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. From that, he has appeared in other films and stage plays.
But Troye Sivan was aiming for a career in music, appearing on a Western Australian version of American Idol. In the meantime, he continued to post to YouTube, becoming one of the most subscribed to individuals in Australia.
Eventually, he did sign to a Universal Music contract, which is how he’s now made it to the airwaves in the States. His two albums have generated a lot of press and awards. Through his YouTube presence, he is now considered one of the most influential teens (that was in 2014 when he still was one) in the world.
Needless to say, you’ll be hearing him a lot, I expect. And if his career doesn’t take hold here in the U.S., you can catch him on YouTube or on the airwaves down in the Outback.
