I’ve posted about Emeli Sande before, but I can’t help but posted about her again. I just think that there aren’t many artists out there that can compare. She has such a powerful voice.
This song, ‘Clown,’ was written by her to express what it felt like to try to get signed to a music contract for the first time. Although she doesn’t phrase it like this, I get the impression that she felt like she was being asked to give away her creative integrity in order to get a contract because the record executives couldn’t figure out how to sell her and her music otherwise. The video clearly demonstrates her feelings about it. In fact, here are her words on the song:
“It’s about how I felt when I was trying to get signed, I was going for all these meetings and people were looking at me like ‘What do we do with you’? It’s about not allowing yourself to be judged by others or to be taken for an idiot.”
With her degree in neuroscience, Emeli Sande is no chump, though. She clearly found her own way in life and in the music industry. I really want her to release a new album!
