Elle King Uses A Surprising Role Reversal With Her Rocking ‘Ex’s & Oh’s’

The music airwaves are full of guys losing or turning away girls. Indeed, our ears are filled, and our bandwidth clogged, with music where the girl(s) take on a role that is no more than eye candy. At best. Usually it’s more akin to the pure objectification of women (take Drake, for example, who I believe did it on purpose to garner attention). They are often portrayed as objects to be viewed, but not respected.

In a strange way, we’ve almost become desensitized to that. We often don’t even notice it, I think. As a rule, I think I generally notice it, and I usually try to avoid posting it when I find it in a music video. But surely I’ve done it from time to time.

Why then am I more uncomfortable posting this video?

I feel like the role reversal that’s going on here is interesting and important. These men are objectified in this video to the same degree, and maybe less, than women often are in videos. Yet I find that almost startling. I don’t know how else to describe it. Without a doubt, it happens in music videos, don’t get me wrong. But usually it’s just one guy. But this is a troupe of men, all perfectly chiseled, literally doing headstands for Elle King.

Did you have the same reaction? What does it say when it’s surprising to see the objectification of men, when it’s almost run of the mill to see the same of women?

I’m not hopping on a soap box here. I’m asking those questions in complete honesty.

Elle King has perhaps generated the conversation she was looking for. Perhaps. But she might just be producing a video that she likes and is as honest to her as it is to men who create such videos of women. I don’t know.

At any rate, Elle King has produced an addictive song that can easily get me to play it 2-3 times in a row, even if the song has been overplayed on the radio.

  • Double standards! Objectification of men is damaging to boys just as it is the other way around. Women supporting this current trend of man-bashing, revenge objectification are exposing themselves as nothing more than childish hypocrites. Those who say it is “different” are misguided morons or simply liars. This video is embarrassing, crude and if you watch it carefully and analyse properly there is no way the same role reversal would be passed with genders reversed – a man putting his hands all over the women (down knickers), reference to her genitals (hotdog), completely topless etc. Feminists have engineered this and men and boys will soon realise the damage being caused as well as the disparities between the so-called role reversals. Pathetic.
