This version of ‘Hotel California’ is not bad as it starts. It’s impressive, without a doubt, but it’s not exactly something that will blow your mind.
But hold on. Keep watching. It gets better. At around 4:20 is when the “guitar solo” starts and it’s crazy! He is so good! Also, accents are usually rather unnoticeable when people sing, but not the case here. I actually really like the singer’s accent.
The a cappella band’s name is Vocal Sampling, hailing from Havana, Cuba. The six-member band met while attending a music academy in Havana. In the words of one of the members, “We would go to parties and play the guitar, piano and some percussion instruments, in short, whatever we had on hand. What we were missing we would fill in for using the sounds of our voices. If necessary we would imitate the sound of a trombone or a trumpet, for example, we did it with our voices.” That was 1989.
The sextet won 3 Latin Grammy Awards in 2002. Their first record contract was signed in Europe in 1992 and shortly thereafter toured the United States, something virtually unheard of at the time from a Cuban band.
